Anxiety is one way our body responds to stress. It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s to come. The first day of school or giving a speech may cause you to feel fearful and nervous. According to the CDC, 7% of children aged 3-17 years in the U.S. have diagnosed anxiety and more than half of those youth receive treatment. Anxiety is not a fun feeling, but we can learn how to manage it.
Lisa Haberbusch, LISW-S, Director of Encompass Central has helped many kids understand and manage this mental health challenge. She recommends “Hey Warrior”–a book for children (ages 5-12+) about overcoming anxiety. Lisa agrees that kids can do great things with the right knowledge. Understanding why anxiety feels the way it does and where the physical symptoms come from is a powerful step in making progress.
This beautifully-illustrated book was written by Karen Young, a psychologist, author and speaker who loves helping kids find their ‘brave.’ She originally wrote this book for her daughter who was changing schools and getting headaches, tummy aches and not sleeping. Here are more warrior tips from an interview with the author.
We hope this book will be a beneficial tool for your family as well. If you or your child need more support for anxiety-related challenges, please reach out to us today.
